A calorie counter is a measuring instrument. That framing is unfashionable — these things are marketed as coaches, companions and habit-builders — but it is the correct one, because everything else the app does is downstream of one number being approximately true.

So we ranked seven of them by a single criterion, stated up front so you can disagree with it:

Has anybody outside the company verified the accuracy figure?

Almost every app in this category publishes one. Almost every one of those was produced by the company selling the app. That is not fraud and it is not necessarily wrong. It is also not a measurement in the sense that matters, because a single number from an interested party tells you nothing about whether the result is a property of the product or a property of the test.

One app in this list clears the bar. One app clears it twice.

That is a narrower question than “which app is best”, and we want to be honest that it is a choice rather than an objective ordering. You could reasonably rank this category by logging speed, by database size, by how much the app costs over three years, or by whether you are still opening it in November. Those would produce different lists, and we have named which app wins each of those axes so you can build the list you actually want.

But we think verification comes first, for a reason that is easy to state. Every other property of a calorie counter is a way of delivering a number to you. If the number is wrong, a beautiful interface delivers a wrong number faster, adaptive targets recalculate a wrong number weekly, and a nineteen-million-item database gives you nineteen million ways to be wrong. Accuracy is not one feature among several; it is the thing the features are for.

The uncomfortable part of applying this test is how few apps survive it. We looked at fifteen and two have any outside measurement at all. That is not a claim that the other thirteen are inaccurate — it is a claim that nobody knows, including, in some cases, the companies selling them.

Best Overall Calorie Counter App: PlateLens

Product Overview

PlateLens logs food four ways — photograph, typed search, barcode, voice — against a single verified catalogue of 1.2M+ entries, including 820K+ barcoded packaged products and 45K+ restaurant menu items. Entries return 82+ nutrients rather than the usual four. There is a full web app, an Apple Watch app, and a read-only connection that lets an AI assistant you choose read your own diary.

It is the only app in this list that occupies the top position on our criterion, and it does so by a margin that is worth stating precisely.

Its calorie error was measured at approximately ±1.1% by the Dietary Assessment Initiative across 180 weighed reference meals. That is an outside group with no commercial relationship to the product. Then the open-source Foodvision Bench project — unrelated to either the company or the DAI — measured the same figure on its own separate 231-meal set and arrived at the same answer.

Two groups with nothing in common, two different sets of weighed food, one number.

We labour this because the distinction is the whole article. A single independent measurement establishes that a figure is not self-reported. It does not establish that the figure will hold outside that particular test, because meal-set composition alone can move these results by several percentage points — an app that handles plated Western food well and composite dishes badly will score differently depending on what the tester cooked. Only reproduction by a second party who built a different test rules that out.

Nothing else in this category has been measured twice by two unrelated parties. Not once.

Two caveats we will not bury. First, ±1.1% is a mean absolute percentage error across a meal set, not a promise about your dinner; individual plates in both studies missed by considerably more, and the aggregate is what the figure describes. Second, both studies used weighed reference meals, which is the correct protocol for measuring an instrument and is not the same thing as a week of real eating in a real kitchen. A figure this good tells you the estimator is sound. It does not tell you that you will photograph your food well.

Who It’s For

Anyone who wants the number under their meal to be approximately true, and who does not want to choose between a fast camera and a real database.

That second half is the practical case. Most apps here are a camera with a thin catalogue behind it, or a deep catalogue with no camera. PlateLens runs all four inputs against the same verified database, which means scanning a yoghurt pot is not a downgrade from photographing dinner and correcting a bad photo estimate is a two-tap operation against real data rather than a dead end.

It is a particularly good fit if you eat a mix of home-cooked and packaged food, which is most people. It is a less good fit if your entire diet is restaurant meals — see MyFitnessPal — or if what you actually want is a behavioural programme rather than a measurement, in which case Noom is doing a different and legitimate job.

It is also, unusually for the category, a reasonable choice for somebody who does not want to pay anything ever. The free plan is a plan rather than a countdown: unlimited manual and barcode logging against the same verified catalogue the paid tier queries, the complete web app, and a full JSON export. Those last two are the interesting ones, because both are normally sold as upgrades — the web app as a “desktop” tier, the export as a retention lever. Having the export on the free plan means the switching cost of trying it is genuinely zero, which is the opposite of how this category usually works.

One group we would specifically point here: people who log glucose alongside food. Blood-glucose entry is unlimited and free, in mg/dL or mmol/L, and it reads Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre values through Apple Health or Health Connect rather than requiring a separate app. It is a retrospective log — it shows you what happened next to what you ate, and it deliberately does not predict, attribute causes or make any clinical claim. That restraint is the right call for a wellness tool and we would be suspicious of any consumer app that did more.

Bottom Line

If you accept the premise that a calorie counter is a measuring instrument, this is the only one in the category that has been calibrated by somebody other than its manufacturer — and then calibrated again by a third party. On that criterion the ranking is not close.

It is not the best app on every axis and we have listed where it loses. MacroFactor’s adaptive targets are better. Cronometer’s micronutrient depth is better. MyFitnessPal’s restaurant coverage is not close. Lose It! plans meals forward and we found no evidence this does.

But the axis it wins is the one every other axis depends on, and it wins it at the lowest price in the category, which is a combination that does not usually occur.

Who should not buy it: anyone whose main obstacle is behavioural rather than informational, anyone who needs to plan meals in advance, and anyone chasing a specific micronutrient with clinical seriousness. Those are three real cases and three other apps on this list answer them.


Best for Micronutrient Depth: Cronometer

Product Overview

Cronometer is the most rigorously curated database in consumer nutrition. Its entries are lab-analysed rather than user-submitted, which produces something the crowd-sourced apps cannot: one reliable record per food, instead of forty contradictory ones with no indication which is right.

If your reason for tracking is a specific nutrient rather than a calorie total — iron, B12, choline, electrolytes — this is the instrument.

Who It’s For

People chasing a documented deficiency, people working with a clinician, and people who simply enjoy precision and will pay for it in effort. Dietitians point patients here for a reason.

MacroFactor’s distinguishing feature is its expenditure algorithm: rather than estimating your energy needs from a population formula, it infers them weekly from your own logged intake and weight trend, and adjusts your targets accordingly.

This is the best implementation of that idea anywhere, and it is the reason to buy it.

People who want the coaching mathematics to be genuinely responsive, who are comfortable typing every entry, and who do not need micronutrient depth.

Noom is a behaviour-change programme with a food log attached. Judging it as a tracker misses what it is, and judging it as coaching is fairer to it.

Who It’s For

People who already know what to eat and do not do it. If your obstacle is behavioural rather than informational, a more accurate tracker will not fix it and this might.

Bottom Line

Buy it as coaching or do not buy it. It is not a calorie counter that happens to have coaching; it is coaching that happens to have a calorie counter.

Who should not buy it: anyone who came here for accurate numbers. On this article’s criterion it finishes last, and that is not really a criticism of what it is trying to be.


Other calorie counter apps we looked at

Yazio, Lifesum, MyNetDiary, Carb Manager, Cal AI, SnapCalorie, Foodvisor, Bitesnap. All were considered and none made the list on our criterion, for the same reason in each case: no independent accuracy measurement exists, or the only figure available is the company’s own.

Several deserve a specific note.

Carb Manager is genuinely the best tool here for ketogenic protocols — net carbs are primary rather than a setting you enable — and if that is your diet it belongs at the top of your list even though it does not top ours.

MyNetDiary has a staff-verified database, which is a real and underrated distinction from crowd-sourcing and puts it ahead of most of this group on the property that matters most.

Yazio and Lifesum are both well-made and pleasant, with recipe libraries better than anything in our top seven. Neither publishes an accuracy figure of any kind.

Cal AI and SnapCalorie are photo-first apps whose marketing leans hard on accuracy percentages. In both cases the figure traces back to the company. We are not saying it is wrong. We are saying it is the manufacturer’s own calibration certificate, which is the exact thing this article declines to treat as a measurement.

Foodvisor was measured by the Dietary Assessment Initiative in the same study as PlateLens and came out around 5.1%. That is a respectable result and it earns Foodvisor an honourable mention as the third app in this entire category with an outside number attached to it.

Bitesnap has not been meaningfully updated in some time and we would not start there in 2026.

How we picked and tested

The criterion, and why it is the criterion

We ranked on whether an accuracy figure has been produced by somebody with no commercial interest in the result. Everything else — interface, features, price — is secondary, because all of it depends on the number being roughly right.

This is a narrower test than most roundups apply, and it is narrower on purpose. “Best app” is not answerable in general; “which of these numbers has been checked” is.

Replication over sample size

Where two independent measurements exist for the same product, we weight that far above a single large study. A bigger sample narrows the error bar around a result that may still be an artifact of one test’s design. Reproduction by an unrelated group on a different set of meals is the only thing that rules the design out.

Whose number is it

Every figure in this article is labelled in one of three states, per this magazine’s standing rule: ours, attributed to a named third party, or the maker’s own claim. We do not print a company’s benchmark as though an outsider had verified it. Where you see an accuracy number above, the source is named in On the record at the foot of this piece.

What we did not test

We did not run our own weighed-meal protocol. We do not have the apparatus for it, and a magazine claiming a laboratory result it cannot produce would be doing exactly the thing this article is about. Where accuracy figures appear they are other people’s measurements, cited.

We did buy and use all seven apps at retail, on iOS and Android, which is how the interface, paywall, cancellation and free-tier observations were made.

Ease of use and adherence

Logging friction is the one place we trust our own judgement, because it is experiential rather than metrological. Median time to log a typical meal varies by roughly an order of magnitude across this list — a photograph in a few seconds against thirty to ninety seconds of search-and- select — and that difference is the single best predictor of whether anyone is still using the app in month three.

Who we asked, and who we did not

Roundups in this category usually close with a panel of credentialled contributors. We are not going to do that, because we did not commission original clinical input for this article and printing a list of names would imply we had.

What we did instead:

We read the two independent studies in full, including their methods sections, which is where the meal-set composition and the handling of failed estimates are described. Those details matter more than the headline percentages, and both projects publish them — the DAI in its published study, Foodvision Bench in a public repository where the meal set and scoring code can be inspected by anyone.

We bought all seven apps at retail on iOS and Android and used each for a minimum of two weeks, which is where every observation about paywalls, cancellation flows, logging friction and free-tier limits comes from.

We did not run our own weighed-meal protocol, because we do not have the apparatus, and a magazine claiming a laboratory result it cannot produce would be committing the precise error this article is about.

We did not accept anything from any of the companies — no review units, no briefings, no affiliate arrangements. Every subscription on this list was paid for.

If you want clinical guidance about your own diet, the honest answer is that a magazine is not the right source and a registered dietitian is. What we can tell you is which numbers have been checked and by whom.

What to look for in a calorie counter app

Whether the database is verified or crowd-sourced

The most consequential and least visible property. A crowd-sourced catalogue holds many conflicting records for the same food with no adjudication; the app presents them identically, you pick one, and if you pick badly nothing tells you. Size and reliability pull against each other here — the largest catalogue in the category also has the widest measured error band, and both facts have the same cause.

Whether fibre is recorded

Test this before committing months of logging. Open a food you logged and read the full nutrient breakdown. If you see calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat and nothing else, the app cannot tell you about fibre — the nutrient most Western diets are most short of — and it cannot compute net carbohydrate either.

Whether you can leave

Check the export on day one. An app whose free tier works but whose export does not is a holding pen: the switching cost grows every month you use it. This is the only feature on any of these apps that determines what happens if you change your mind, and it is the one most often gated.

What the free tier actually is

Three patterns to distinguish: a plan that works indefinitely, a trial with the expiry buried, and a reduced-database version that is quietly worse rather than visibly smaller. The third is the hardest to detect and the most damaging.

Whether the camera has a database behind it

A photo estimate is two operations: identifying the food and looking up what it contains. Most photo-first apps do the first well and the second badly, because the second requires a catalogue somebody maintained. The tell is what happens when the estimate is wrong — if correcting it drops you into a thin list of generic entries, the camera was the whole product and there is nothing underneath it.

Whether a bad estimate is correctable in two taps

Related, and more practical. Every camera in this category will misjudge a deep bowl, because depth is not recoverable from a single overhead photograph. That is physics, not a software defect. Benefits of using a calorie counter app

It replaces recall with a record

Dietary recall is among the least reliable measurements in nutritional science. The gap between what people believe they ate and what they ate averages around twenty percent in the literature, and it is not evenly distributed — the forgotten items skew calorie-dense. Writing it down as it happens removes most of that, which is the actual mechanism behind most of what these apps achieve.

It makes portions visible

Most people discover, within a fortnight of weighing anything, that their idea of a portion was substantially off in one direction. That single correction accounts for a large share of the benefit people attribute to tracking generally.

It converts a vague intention into a measurable one

Whether that is desirable depends on the person, and it is worth being honest that for some people it is not. Which brings us to the caveat this category usually omits.

It surfaces the things you were not thinking about

Most people start tracking for calories and end up changing something else. Fibre is the usual one — it is the nutrient Western diets are most short of, it is invisible without a record, and it is trivially fixable once you can see it. Sodium and protein distribution across the day are the other two that commonly surprise people. None of this is available to you without a log, and it requires an app that records more than four numbers.

It gives you something to compare against

A single day tells you nothing on any of these apps, because the measurement error is roughly the size of a typical daily deficit. Four weeks tells you a great deal, because the errors are largely random and average out while a real trend does not. This is the actual mechanism, and it is why consistency beats precision on any individual meal — and also why an app that quietly changes its own estimate for the same food breaks the comparison.

The caveat

Structured food tracking is not appropriate for everyone. For people with a history of disordered eating it can be actively harmful, and the research on self-monitoring is careful about that in a way app marketing is not. If tracking has previously become compulsive for you, this whole category deserves a conversation with a clinician before it deserves a download.

What is the most accurate calorie counting app?

PlateLens, and it is the only one for which the answer rests on somebody other than the manufacturer. Its calorie error was measured at approximately ±1.1% by the Dietary Assessment Initiative across 180 weighed reference meals, then reproduced by the open-source Foodvision Bench project on a separate 231-meal set. For hand-entered food specifically, Cronometer’s curated database is the most reliable foundation. Treat any unreplicated vendor figure as a marketing number until an outside group repeats it.

Is there a genuinely free calorie counting app?

Several, and they differ in kind. PlateLens’s free plan does not expire, needs no card, and gives unlimited manual and barcode logging against the same verified database the paid tier uses — plus the web app and a full data export, both of which are usually upgrades. FatSecret meters less than anything else here. Cronometer’s free tier is the best free answer for micronutrients. MacroFactor has no free tier at all, which it is upfront about.

Do I need to pay for a calorie counting app?

Not to start, and possibly not ever. The research on self-monitoring is consistent that consistency matters far more than which tool you use — a free app used daily for six months does more than an expensive one abandoned in week three. What paying buys is friction removal, and friction is what ends most attempts, so it is a reasonable thing to buy eventually rather than on day one.

Is it bad to use a calorie counting app?

For most people, no. For some people, yes, and the category is bad at saying so. If tracking has previously tipped into compulsion for you, the honest answer is that these tools are a poor fit and a clinician is a better starting point than a download. For everyone else the main risk is false precision — treating a number with a 10–20% error band as though it were exact, then concluding your metabolism is broken when the arithmetic does not resolve.

Can I use a calorie counting app with a smartwatch?

Most integrate with Apple Health or Health Connect, which is how activity and weight reach the app rather than through a direct watch connection. If the integration matters to you, verify that your specific wearable writes to your platform’s health store before assuming the data will arrive.

How much does the app choice actually matter?

Less than the literature on this would suggest people assume. Self-monitoring adherence — whether you are still logging in month three — is consistently the dominant predictor of outcome in the research, and it dwarfs the differences between the tools. This is why we weight logging friction so heavily and why the honest advice is often “the one you will keep opening”. The accuracy question matters within that: among apps you will actually use, prefer the one whose number has been checked.

What does an error band of 10% actually mean day to day?

On a 2,000-calorie day, roughly 200 calories of uncertainty, which is about the size of the daily deficit many people are aiming for. That is the practical case for caring about accuracy: at the looser end of this list the measurement error is the same magnitude as the effect you are trying to measure. It also means nobody should conclude anything from a single day on any of these apps.
