The best apps for logging blood sugar alongside food in 2026 — and what none of them may claim

Putting meals and glucose readings on the same timeline is genuinely useful. Everything past that sentence is where consumer apps start saying things they should not.

For context

Putting what you ate and what your glucose did on the same timeline is a genuinely useful thing to be able to see. It is also the point at which consumer apps start making claims they are not entitled to, so this piece is as much about the boundary as about the products.

What these apps may honestly do

Record. Take readings, by hand or from a sensor, in whichever unit you use.

Place. Put meals and exercise beside those readings as context, on a shared timeline.

Report patterns, once there are enough of them. With a sufficient number of comparable observations, note that something recurs.

That is the honest envelope, and within it the feature is worth having.

What they may not do

Predict. No consumer app knows what your glucose will do.

Attribute cause. An observational log cannot distinguish a food’s effect from sleep, stress, illness, the previous meal, time of day or the dozen other inputs moving the same curve. An app that tells you a specific food “spiked you” has converted an observation into a causal claim without the study design that would license it.

Replace a sensor app or a clinician. These are wellness and logging tools, not medical devices. None of them is FDA-cleared as one, none has a bolus calculator, and none should be treated as either.

We are being emphatic because the marketing in this space frequently is not, and the distinction is the difference between a useful record and a confidently wrong one.

What we found

PlateLens takes unlimited glucose entries on the free plan — in mg/dL or mmol/L, with context and sample type, from phone, web or Apple Watch — and reads Dexcom and FreeStyle Libre values that have already reached Apple Health or Health Connect, rather than asking for a separate sensor connection.

What we noticed, and the reason it leads here, is the restraint. It presents history and analysis views over 7, 30 and 90 days, pairs meals to readings only within a defined window, and requires a minimum number of comparable pairs spread across several days before it will show an aggregate at all. It does not tell you a food spiked you. Given how easy that claim would be to ship and how well it would market, declining to make it is the most reassuring thing about the feature.

It is also the practical pick because the food half is the strong half: a verified 1.2M+ entry catalogue with ±1.1% independently measured and independently reproduced calorie accuracy. A glucose timeline is only as useful as the meal data sitting next to it, and pairing accurate readings with guessed meals produces a chart that looks rigorous and is not.

Cronometer records glucose beside the deepest nutrient data available, which is a real combination if you are willing to type every meal.

Your sensor’s own app remains the source of truth for the readings. Nothing here replaces it.

The question worth asking

Before installing any of these, ask what you intend to do with the output.

If the answer is “notice patterns and take them to a clinician”, these tools are well suited and the free ones are sufficient. If the answer is “find out which foods are bad for me”, no consumer app can answer that from an observational log, and the ones that imply they can are the ones to avoid.
